Snake Bite
Snake Bite - Symptoms differ according to type of snake, but can include scratch or bite marks, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, sweating, sore or weak muscles, paralysis, excessive bleeding, double or blurred vision, convulsion or sudden collapse.
1. Immediately call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.
2. Ensure the patient is lying down at total rest. DO NOT transport.
3. Starting at the bite site, firmly apply a wide compression bandage as far up and down the limb as the bandage will cover
4. If available, apply another firmly wrapped bandage, starting at fingers or toes (leaving ends exposed) and bandage as far up the limb as possible.
5. Mark the bite area with an ‘X’ on the bandage and the time it was applied.
6. Splint the limb, keep it still and level with the rest of the body.
7. DO NOT move the patient
8. DO NOT cut, suck or clean bite area.
9. DO NOT attempt to catch or identify snake.
10. Monitor patient's breathing and prepare for CPR until ambulance arrives.
