Practise Mindfulness with Attitude

Practising Mindfulness - or purposeful, moment-to-moment, non-judgemental awareness - reduces stress and anxiety, and improves mental health and physical wellbeing.

There are 9 Core Attitudes for practising Mindfulness:

1. Non-judging - be aware of judgemental thinking; witness your experiences objectively.

    2. Patience - allow things to unfold in their own time.

      3. Beginner's mind - live each moment as if for the first time, not based on past experiences.

      4. Trust - trust in your feelings and intuition.

      5. Non-striving - be present in the moment-to-moment progression of life, rather than constantly striving for results.

      6. Acceptance - have courage to accept things for what they presently are; don't force them to be what they are not.

      7. Non-attachment - let go of expectation to make space for accepting reality.

      8. Gratitude and appreciation - take time to appreciate something every day and think, talk or write about what you are grateful for.

      9. Compassion - show kindness and empathy for your whole self and others.

How do students and teachers benefit from practising mindfulness

A 2016 study by Smiling Mind assessed the impact of incorporating mindfulness programs into schools. It found that students were more engaged in learning, were sleeping better, and experienced a reduction in bullying and classroom disruption. Students more at-risk of emotional difficulties also felt their emotional wellbeing and concentration improved, their positive wellbeing and ability to manage emotions was enhanced, and their psychological distress decreased.

Teachers also experienced improved sleep and concentration, enhanced wellbeing and emotional management, and a significant reduction in distress and tension.
